Applications are down, cost per application is up, or a role that used to fill itself is suddenly sitting there with nothing coming through. Nothing about your account looks different, and the instinct is to assume Indeed has quietly changed something against you. Sometimes that’s true.
More often, the cause is closer to home, and finding it starts with a short, deliberate investigation rather than a reaction.
Start With What Actually Changed
Before looking anywhere else, get specific about the pattern. Applications, clicks, cost per application and apply rate can each decline for different reasons, and the combination narrows things down considerably. Falling clicks with stable cost points somewhere different than stable clicks with rising cost, and a specific pattern is far more useful to work from than a general sense that things have gotten worse.
Check Your Own Account First
Internal causes are the fastest to fix, and also the easiest to overlook, because nobody remembers making the change that caused the problem. Work through the obvious ones before assuming the platform is at fault.
• Was the job title, description or salary information edited or reposted recently?
• Has the daily or monthly budget changed, or is it exhausting earlier in the day than it used to?
• Has the campaign structure shifted, with this role now competing against others for the same budget?
• Is the posting still live and accurate, or has it quietly gone stale while attention moved elsewhere?
That last point matters more than it seems. CareerBuilder research found that job seekers are roughly twice as likely to apply to postings that look current and recently updated compared to ones that appear old or recycled, so a listing left untouched for months can lose momentum even if nothing about the role itself has changed.
Look at the Competitive and Labour Market Picture
If your account genuinely hasn’t changed, the next place to look is outside it. Indeed operates as an auction, so when more employers sponsor similar roles in your area, your job competes for the same visibility against more and often bigger budgets. Costs rise and applications fall even though nothing on your end moved.
Candidate supply also shifts with the local economy, seasonality and nearby employer activity, and a role that performed well six months ago can genuinely be harder to fill today for reasons that have nothing to do with your campaign.
Consider Whether Indeed Itself Has Changed
Indeed updates its products, ranking behaviour and pricing regularly, and those changes can move results for employers who never touched their account.
This is real, and it’s also the explanation most readily reached for, often before the simpler internal causes have been ruled out. Staying reasonably current on major platform changes matters, but it shouldn’t be the first place you look, since jumping straight there tends to skip past the causes you can actually do something about today.
What to Do Once You’ve Found the Cause
The order matters here.
- Internal issues, once found, usually have a straightforward fix: refresh the content, adjust the budget, restructure the campaign.
- Competitive and labour market shifts call for a different response, since bidding harder against a saturated auction isn’t always worth the extra spend, and sometimes the more sensible move is adjusting expectations or broadening the search rather than paying more for the same result.
- Platform-level changes require staying informed rather than reacting to every headline, since not every announcement affects every employer equally.
Diagnosing before acting protects both your budget and your data. Changes made before you understand the cause tend to compound the original problem, and they make it much harder to tell later what actually worked.
Yoke was founded by five people who spent years working inside Indeed, giving us a unique understanding of the platform. We know how the auction behaves, what actually influences job visibility, and which changes to job content, budget pacing, or campaign structure genuinely improve hiring outcomes.
That experience shapes how we manage every client account. Instead of chasing quick wins or making changes for the sake of it, we focus on the things that make a measurable difference, helping you get more from the budget you’re already investing.
As an Indeed Agency Partner, we work closely with the platform while staying focused on what matters most: helping employers hire more effectively.
